Kelsey Bruce is a senior majoring in theatre and double-minoring in film and liberal arts from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She is a member of the Honors College, the Blount Undergraduate Program, and Alpha Psi Omega. Although she entered college wanting to pursue stage management and directing, after working for the Institute for Communication and Information Research she became interested in how research is applicable to the entertainment business. In the spring of sophomore year, she found her passion for television research after Forever, a pilot series on ABC, was canceled. She keeps up on trends in the industry by following tvbythenumbers. This past summer she worked as a research intern for WBRC Fox 6 in Birmingham, where she helped analyze ratings and purchasing habits of the population in the Birmingham DMA. After graduating with her masters, she hopes to work for a network in television development running focus groups to gauge the reception of new shows.
She will be working on her first undergraduate research project at the Capstone this academic year for her honor senior thesis. The project, advised by Dr. Steve Burch in the theatre department and Maya Champion in the film department, will explore whether audience members associate with television characters based on personality traits or similarities in demographics - gender, age, sexuality, ethnicity, education level, etc.
As a research ambassador she is most excited to help students in areas of fine arts and humanities connect and work with professors in their fields of interest. She is a strong believer that creativity enables innovation and that interdisciplinary research benefits everyone.
