Annie Meyer-Rasmussen is a sophomore at the University of Alabama majoring in Anthropology and Spanish with a minor in Blount Liberal Arts. Her research interests include cultural anthropology in South America and race in America. During her freshman year, Annie worked with Dr. Oths in the Anthropology Department to research traditional medicine in Peru. Using data Dr. Oths had collected between 1988 and 2013, she analyzed how social and environmental changes, such as a shift from a communal village to private property and intense climate change, affected Andeans knowledge of traditional medicine options. She found that although some knowledge had remained, traditional healers, a vital source of knowledge in the region, were becoming scarce. Annie plans to continue this research throughout her undergraduate career, and after graduation, she plans to pursue a PhD in Anthropology.
